Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation Maxim Sokolov made a working trip to the Kaliningrad Region on April 27
During the trip, Maxim Sokolov and Governor of the Kaliningrad Region Anton Alikhanov took part in the opening of additional passenger service spaces as part of the 2nd launch site of passenger terminal reconstruction at Khrabrovo International Airport. The participants of the ceremony also included Roman Trotsenko, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Novaport LLC, and Roman Balashov, Plenipotentiary Representative of the President of the Russian Federation in the Northwestern Federal District.
“Today is a big day not only for local residents of the Kaliningrad Region, but for the whole aviation industry of our country. We are opening, practically on a full scale, a new facility – Khrabrovo terminal and airfield. It is one of the most important facilities in preparation of infrastructure for the coming FIFA World Cup. The implementation of this project will make it possible not only to increase the attractiveness of this region for tourists, but also to welcome the guests of sports events at the highest level,” the Minister said.
“This reconstruction has a long and complicated history. We had many tasks at hand, but with support from the Russian Ministry of Transport and the Federal Air Transport Agency, we succeeded to accomplish them. I hope, residents and visitors of the region will see value in the renovated airport terminal,” Anton Alikhanov noted.
A 3,350 meter long air strip with no limitation to flight distance is in operation starting from today.
The reconstruction provides for commissioning of a single preflight inspection area for all departing passengers under the dome of the building. The number of security check lines was increased: currently there are 4, with an opportunity to extend up to 7 lines. Moreover, the departing and arriving passenger flows have been separated. There are now three new baggage conveyor belts and a new comfortable baggage claim area. Telescopic passageways with glass boarding bridges have been installed. The territory under reconstruction amounted to about 5,500 square meters.
Under the Accessibility Program, the building of the terminal is equipped with elevators and stairlifts to meet the needs of passengers with disabilities. There are also designated restrooms, waiting areas, and an ambulant lift truck providing convenient conditions for delivery of passengers with limited mobility aboard an aircraft. Glass facades of the air-terminal building ensure good illumination and comfort for passengers in the waiting rooms.
During the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the acceptance rate of the airport will reach 1,950 people per hour in one direction. Passenger contra-flow traffic systems will be in place. Moreover, there will be additional mobile passport control booths, and 22 fixed checkpoints will be open at the same time.
The reconstruction of the terminal, which is 40 thousand square meters in area, is being implemented in 2 stages. The 1st stage included works in the left wing of the air-terminal, and after that a part of it (over 25,000 square meters) was opened in June 2017. From August 1 to 13, 2017 all international flights were moved to the new part of the air-terminal. Also, a temporary border checkpoint was launched. The total budget of the reconstruction project is 3.8 bln rubles.
On the same day, the Minister and the Governor observed the construction progress at the Vostochnaya overhead road and visited the reconstruction site of the 2nd stage of the Circular Route in the Primorskaya Recreational Area district (a northern bypass of Kaliningrad and reconstruction of the transport junction with Moskovsky Prospekt).Governor Anton Alikhanov and Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation Maxim Sokolov also had a personal meeting. They discussed matters related to improving quality of passenger services, ensuring transport accessibility of the region, increasing the number of flights, and preparing the airport for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
